Almost six years ago, on Dec. 1, 2010, we opened our doors at Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus for outpatient services. In many ways, we’ve grown up with the community around us, expanding services and access throughout our short history. However, with west Houston’s continued strong population growth, major investments being made by housing developers and two of the area’s largest school districts – Katy and Cy-Fair – it was clear West Campus needed to invest significantly to keep up with the services needed most by our community. Two years ago, we laid out a plan to do just that.

With the support of Texas Children’s Board of Trustees, in January 2015 we set out on an aggressive growth strategy that would fundamentally change the trajectory of our campus. We knew that in order to keep up with the demand, West Campus would need additional capacity and capabilities. Looking back over the past two years, we have accomplished so much:

October 2015

To address the need for additional inpatient capacity, an 18-bed acute care unit opened, expanding our total number of beds at West Campus from 44 to 62. As part of this expansion, Texas Children’s created a one-of-a-kind, 10-bed Special Isolation Unit.

April 2016

To greatly increase our ability to perform complex imaged-guided procedures, West Campus opened an interventional radiology suite to serve our patients and families. This suite was the first of its kind for Texas Children’s outside of Texas Children’s main campus.

Summer 2016

To increase access in our surgical areas at West Campus, we doubled our perioperative capacity taking our preoperative rooms from six to 12, postoperative beds from 12 to 22, procedure rooms from one to two and operating rooms from four to eight.

Fall 2016

To increase access to Texas Children’s array of pediatric subspecialists, we have built additional capacity into existing clinics at West Campus by adding 12 new exams rooms. These exam rooms helped increase access to a broad range of both medical and surgical subspecialties.

As we move into 2017, there are only two pieces to the expansion puzzle left to complete. In early 2017, we will complete a new outpatient clinic space that will allow greater access to high-quality specialty care for neurology, renal and dermatology services. Then, in fall 2017, we will finish the build-out of our last piece of inpatient shell space and open a new 22-bed pediatric intensive care unit.

As we look back on the accomplishments of the last two years, we are reminded just how much we can do together. The future of Texas Children’s West Campus is bright and this latest growth story is just the beginning.
